Currently, alternative energy in the forms of wind power and solar have become ever more practical options as their technologies have been mainstreamed.
The very challenging mechanics in the legacy industries of exploring, refining, converting, and distributing energy has created regular demand for the high strength, high temperature, and corrosion resistance afforded by specialty metals. Alternative energy applications, by contrast, need lightweight solutions that still provide robust strength and corrosion resistance. Specialty metals still provide answers to alternative energy products as well. In 2018, over 650,000 metric tonnes of stainless steel was consumed by the energy segment.
